The first issue of “It Girl and the Atomics” got off to a slow start, despite stellar Mike Norton art and a pretty good adherence to Mike Allred’s wacky “Madman” universe. The plot has found its legs by now, but has the book hit any sort of stride yet?

Tim Seeley and Mike Norton’s Midwestern horror love-letter blew the doors off of comic book shops last month, selling out quickly and receiving favorable comparisons to “The Walking Dead.” Though the comparison is fair and its target audience of horror fans is similar, the opening issue confidently went about being its own animal — and issue #2 goes even further in setting itself apart.

It’s been a while since we’ve been able to visit Mike Allred’s quirky brainchild, “Madman.” Though that character is not the subject of this series, it was with much fanfare that Image comics announced a return to that universe through “It Girl and the Atomics.” But will fans of Allred’s beloved series find something to like without his creative juices behind it?
